Postpartum like a Honeymoon

Updated: Sep 8, 2021

They say everyone wants to hold baby, but who is there to hold mum?

During these times mothers are so overlooked. They're left in limbo land, grieving their life as an independent woman, thrown into a world of constant demand as sole carer for this tiny person, who let's face it, does not come with an instruction manual.

That's why I feel it's so important to prepare yourself for the days, weeks and even months following your child's birth. The postpartum period.

Be easy on yourself, take time out, and enjoy the newborn bubble. Postpartum like a honeymoon, here's how: 1) Privacy in a safe space - stay where you are most comfortable, if that's home, be confident to stay at home.

2) Chores - get someone to do the chores, afterall, would you do chores on your honeymoon? Hell no! The same goes for now, ask your partner/family/friends to make you a cuppa, stick a wash on or cook you dinner. It really helps! 3) Nourish your soul - What soothes you? What makes you feel good? Do it! Rest, relax, take a bath in lavender oil and milk, burn some relaxing candles, get into a new Netflix series. Slow down. 4) Support Network - like a wedding; who's in the bridal party? Except now it's, who's in your mum tribe? Build your tribe, lean on them and love them hard. These are people who will support you no matter what you need, no matter the time of day. They build you up. 5) Homemade Food - Would you diet on your honeymoon? Ofcourse you wouldn't! Postpartum is no time to diet either. Enjoy home cooked, comfort foods. Batch cook and freeze meals before you have the baby and ask friends to bring a homemade dish over. Good food nourishes you too. Oh and chocolate, don't question it, just eat the damn chocolate! 6) Ask for what you need - Speak up, ask for what you need. If you need a cuppa, a lie down, or a chat, don't be shy. Ask for it! All these things are important for our mental health. And if, what you need is medical help, don't be shy, get it. You're not alone, no one is an expert, we're all learning on the job. Even my friend third time round had to call and be rescued on her walk yesterday. We're all just winging it! You feel alone and have no one to talk to, reach out to me. I'm here!
